High Definition 3D has made it into the Beaufort Memorial operating suites, enabling our surgeons to perform more complicated minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures with smaller incisions, reducing blood loss, pain and the risk of infection.

Initially used for urologic surgery, da Vinci is now being used for gynecologic surgery, as well as many other types of surgery. The main applications in gynecology are in reproductive surgery, including hysterectomies, uterine fibroids, and female cancers.
The da Vinci Si features streamlined instrumentation with a greater range of motion and HD optical channels, resulting in extremely accurate depth perception.
“It’s better than the naked eye with its 10 times zoom,” the naked eye,” said Dr. Glenn Werner, one of seven Beaufort Memorial OB-GYN surgeons, who uses the da Vinci.
“It’s almost as if I’m inside the patient’s body,” said Dr. Andra Davis-Tolbert, the OB-GYN performing the highest volume of da Vinci surgeries at Beaufort Memorial. “With a longer reach, the da Vinci Si it allows me to use the da Vinci on larger patients.”
In addition to the 3D images of the body, surgeons can also see additional images, such as an ultrasound and EKG, on separate monitors. More importantly, da Vinci’s Endowrist® instrumentation provides dexterity and range of motion far greater than the human hand.
Articulation and rotation of the instrument arms has been increased from 180 to 336 degrees. The da Vinci Si’s unparalleled precision also will make it possible to perform other types of laparoscopic surgeries, including kidney procedures.
“The new model can be positioned from the patient’s side, which allows for newer and more advanced instrumentation and other specialties to offer patients the benefits of da Vinci,” said Dr. Patricia Thompson.
